En route pour son premier voyage pontifical en Afrique, Benoît XVI a déclaré mardi que distribuer des préservatifs n'était pas une solution dans la lutte contre l'épidémie de Sida.

Le pape ne s'était jamais exprimé explicitement jusque-là sur l'utilisation du préservatif, soulignant seulement que l'Eglise catholique était en première ligne de la bataille contre le sida en Afrique. Le Vatican prône l'abstinence comme moyen de lutter contre la propagation du VIH, qui fait des ravages sur le continent noir, mais certains prêtres et religieuses impliqués dans la lutte contre le Sida remettent en cause l'opposition de l'Eglise à l'usage du préservatif.

En route vers Yaoundé, Benoît XVI a également annoncé son intention de lancer un appel à la "solidarité internationale" envers l'Afrique face à la crise économique mondiale. Il a ajouté que si l'Eglise ne peut proposer de solutions économiques spécifiques, elle peut offrir des suggestions "spirituelles et morales". La crise actuelle découle d'un "manque d'éthique dans les structures économiques", a-t-il estimé, "c'est là que l'Eglise peut apporter une contribution".

Il faudra aussi toute la catéchèse sur la sexualité de Jean-Paul II pour que l’Eglise voie dans l’acte sexuel un moteur de l’amour et pas seulement le péché de concupiscence nécessaire à la perpétuation de la race humaine. L’Eglise reconnaît à présent que l’engendrement n’est pas la seule raison légitime et morale de l’union sexuelle d’un homme et d’une femme, mais qu’il existe aussi une réelle fécondité spirituelle.
